Bosco Mukiibi lived the life of an orphaned child. Growing up without a father and losing his mother at a critical age, he knows the challenges young Ugandan orphans face daily. Seeing the tremendous needs on the streets of Jinja, he decided to invest in a career of helping the most vulnerable. Bosco started working for a children’s NGO in 1998 and found he had a great connection with local street children. His past, passion and vision allows him to connect with them and point them in the direction of hope. In 2002 Bosco started locating vulnerable children on the edge of ending up on the streets. With the help of Ferdi van den Bergh, a Dutchman he had first met in 1999, Bosco was able to help these children financially with school fees and some mentoring. Ferdi and his wife Tatiana kept seeing names added to the list of children receiving school fees and so grew the list of sponsors! In 2008 they decided to go to Uganda for themselves and meet the 28 children Bosco was coaching at that time. Harry and Hen moved to Jinja in 2008. Their most exciting and rewarding times were, surprisingly, with the street children so they decided to get involved. One of the first boys they got to know on the streets was Joseph. Whenever they gave the street boys anything he would always ask “what about books for school?” They thought he was just trying to get more money, but one day they asked him which school he wanted to go to and he seemed genuinely keen so they all went off to see the headmistress. A week later we arrived at the school for his first day all dressed in his new uniform. Five weeks later was the end of the school year and he came 25th out of 178! Joseph was proof that helping these boys can make a real difference and that the help they needed was a very small step. After appealing to their friends for support, Harry & Hen were able to send 35 streetboys to school within a few months. Bosco and the van den Berghs where dealing with vulnerable children BEFORE they ended up on the street. Harry and Hen were dealing with vulnerable children AFTER they ended up on the streets… then why not join forces? In 2009 we joined together as 1moreChild, focusing on vulnerable children in the Jinja district. We provide various levels of support from assisting families with school fees to fully-managed homes. 1moreChild is fighting for children’s futures that have been tragically lost…
